Trouble

I’m not sure what’s happening here, but it looks like trouble.

What year is this?

The absence of any modern brands and the style of clothing of the people in this shot give it a feel that it could have been shot in the 60’s.  It was actually Rundle Mall, 2008.

This pup was in training to be a Guide dog.  He had some way to go.

Fixie

FixyThe title refers to the bike in the side of the frame.  Fixed speed bikes are the bikes we used to ride as kids but they went out of fashion with the advent of first 10, then 12, 18 and now 21 speed bikes.  Fixed speed bikes or “Fixies” as they’re known have a single speed and have made a big come back and there’s now a whole sub-culture around them.  Their stripped down, lightweight, minimalist design makes them favoured by bike couriers.  Some of the designs are beautiful in their simplicity. Often they only have front brakes, or often no brakes at all and stopping relies purely on the ability of riders to lean back on the peddles.  And, of course, you can’t coast on them, meaning the peddles constantly turn.

As with all sub-cultures today there are a ton of websites, blogs and forums around, and one of them, Fyxomatosis, gets my vote for one of the most imaginatively named sites on the web.

I’ve become a bit obsessed by spotting them and was taking some shots of the bike when the opportunity for a bit of street portraiture presented itself.

Fyxomatosis or Deus Ex Machina have some beautiful, minimalist fixies.

Shortlisted for Head On Portraiture Prize

I was pretty pleased to learn this shot was shortlisted for the Head On Portraiture Prize.  It didn’t win but being shortlisted was a fine thing. It was taken in 2008 using a Canon FTb with 50mm 1.8 which I picked up at a garage sale for $15.00.  Two of the judges for the Head On Prize were Trent Parke and Narelle Autio. It was nice to think that they thought enough of this image to shortlist it.  See some of their work and some other great street photography at iN-PUBLiC.
