Justin Townes Earle played a brilliant show at The Gov last night. Stripped back to just himself and fiddle player/vocalist Josh Hedley, it was a show that moved between raw and harsh east Texas blues to beautiful laid back ballads. The beautiful “One more night in Brooklyn” a highlight for me. His version of Springsteen’s “Racing in the Street” during the encore was also a thing to behold.

News this morning that a charity art exhibition at Sydney Children’s Hospital has “collapsed” after hospital officials viewed the photo below and pulled their support.

The image by Archibald Prize winner Del Kathryn Barton is an image of her son not wearing a top.

Gasp!

This is in the same vein as the Subiaco Public Library refusing to exhibit the image below by Nicole Boenig-McGrade.

This time there’s two kids without tops on.

Double gasp!!

What’s particularly troubling in both these cases is that an official in officialdom has decided not that the images are offensive, but that some member of the public may find them offensive and the official has therefore decided to remove the offending image before anyone is, er, actually offended.

Make sense?

I remember reading somewhere that one of the iN-PUBLiC photographers (and I thought it was either Jesse Marlow or Matt Stuart but can’t find anything at the moment) will often make images with heart shapes contained in them.

This is how my son squirted sauce onto his chicken and chips the other night.

Blake Andrews’ collector prints and gum

A couple of weeks ago, Blake Andrews, posted about Mike Mandel’s Photographer Baseball cards. As part of the post he made an offer to send 80 of his workprints and a stick of gum for the price of postage.

I’ve been collecting photo books and prints lately and I like a bargain so I took him up on the offer.

They arrived yesterday and, as promised, they’re pretty interesting. It’s not often you get to see the working prints of a more established photographer and to see the difference between what he considers a keeper and a non-keeper. ( I’m basing this solely on what I’ve seen on iN-PUBLiC, B and his website, blakeandrewsphoto.com ).

It also gave me an insight into the sheer volume some of the more established photographers shoot. They shoot a lot.

(“more established” is now officially my antonym for “emerging”)

Below are three of my favourites from the ~~series~~ collection. Beneath those is a scan of a list that was found on the back of an image and the stick of gum. Although unclear in the scan, the first two items in the list appear to be “mow” and “unpack”.

As per all collectors series, I haven’t eaten the gum.

I’ve been muttering about getting a medium format film camera for a while. A few decent sales online and when I saw this going for second-hand I thought I’d finally give it a go.

A Fuji 645 wide. You know something is good when it’s got “Professional” in funky green lettering down the side of the lens barrel. And that mid ’80′s design is a thing of beauty.

I read a few reviews before I bought it and they all raved about the sharpness of the lens…

A hassle compared to digital? Yes, I guess so, but I’m still getting over the depth and clarity of 120 film. It’s pretty astonishing;

And why is Christopher Walken walking through James Place?
